Former senator, Sheu Sani as said renaming of the National Stadium Abuja to Moshood Abiola stadium should give the stadium a opportunity to be renovated and refurbished.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday named Abuja arena after Abiola while conveying his debut June 12 Democracy Day address at the Eagles Square, Abuja.
Buhari had on June 6 posthumously awarded the man which June 12 revolves around, Moshood Abiola, with Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), an honour reserved only for presidents.
Abiola won the 1993 presidential election which was annulled by former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Sani, who lost his seat during February 23 elections, also commended the action of the President.
“Renaming the National Stadium Abuja after Chief MKO Abiola is a great honour and commendable. Abiola was a pillar of sports, he deserves it. This should also be an opportunity to renovate and refurbish the arena for so long in decrepit state,” Sani said.
